for graduate position, you can't really network your way in. It's all very standardised and the applications are all online with clear deadlines.

After that however, if you have already been working for some time, the networking element becomes much more important. Its all common sense: keep in touch with your classmates in the industry, attend industry events, etc. Also, you should use linkedin as a networking tool and try to contact people to gather some more information.

However, bear in mind that while networking may help you get an interview, its all about preparation. You need to do a lot of detailed research before you talk to anybody.
